Cairn Terrier

Offers information on the West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier breeds. Over 200 years ago, on the ancient Isle of Skye and in the Scottish Highlands, the ancestors of today's Cairn Terrier earned their keep routing vermin from the rock piles (called cairns) commonly found on Scottish farmland. These early terriers were highly prized and bred for their working ability, not appearance. Gradually the breeds known as the Scottish Terrier and the West Highland White evolved and were named. The Cairn (the last to be formally named) remained the closest to the original small working terrier, bolting the fox, otter and weasel, sharing the meager fare of the crofter's household. Today the Cairn Terrier in America is a sensible, confident little dog, independent but friendly with everyone he meets. Scottish Terrier

Offers information on the West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier breeds. The Scottish Terrier is a small, compact, short-legged, sturdily-built dog of good bone and substance. His head is long in proportion to his size. He has a hard, wiry, weather-resistant coat and a thick-set, cobby body which is hung between short, heavy legs. These characteristics, joined with his very special keen, piercing, "varminty" expression, and his erect ears and tail are salient features of the breed. The Scottish Terrier's bold, confident, dignified aspect exemplifies power in a small package.

Terriers

Offers information on the West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier breeds. The popularity of the breed grew in the early 1900's after a somewhat shaky start. Dr. F.C. Weing, destined to become known as the Dean of the Scottish Terrier, took on the task of popularizing the breed by importing the best stock available, insisting on separate show classes and writing a monthly column about his beloved breed in Popular Dogs Magazine. When a three-year- old champion named Tickle 'Em Jock won the coveted Best in Show at Westminster in 1911 the breed really took off and has remained popular to this day.
